The design explores themes of time and movement, which are intricately linked to the surrounding environment. Located in a landscape that encourages a connection with nature, the building serves various functions aimed at both community and individual well-being. The central concept, referred to as "Eternal Recurrence," reflects cyclical interactions through dynamic forms and a carefully considered layout.

Concept and Layout

The building is organized into specific zones that cater to different activities and gatherings. A central event space of 380 square meters serves as a flexible area for various functions. Adjacent to this, a kitchen measuring 105 square meters supports communal cooking and dining experiences. Additional spaces include a compost toilet, shower facilities, and a thermal bath, collectively promoting health and social engagement among users.

Cultural and Spatial Integration

The design incorporates cultural elements, particularly the concept of counterclockwise rotation as it relates to Jewish clocks. This thoughtful inclusion connects architectural expression with deeper cultural meanings. The use of abstract forms allows for exploration within the space, resisting conventional linear designs. Visitors can navigate through dimensions that evoke curiosity and interaction.

Materiality and Landscape Interaction

Material choices contribute significantly to the project, enhancing both stability and environmental harmony. Key materials include an epoxy layer, rammed earth floor, and pure earth with radiant tubing, all chosen for their performance. Landscape features, such as a cactus plant and an olive tree, strengthen the relationship between the built structure and the natural world, supporting sustainability goals while adding visual depth.

Lighting Design

Lighting has been carefully designed to enhance both functionality and ambiance. LED pool lights and strategically placed fixtures create a welcoming environment while ensuring adequate safety. This design consideration benefits pathways and communal areas, making the space more inviting for users at any time of day.

The culmination of these elements results in a cohesive composition that offers a thoughtful environment for all who enter. The curves and organic forms used throughout the design reflect the rhythms of life, inviting users to engage with their surroundings in meaningful ways.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
