The design for the coffee shop and visitor center at the base of Hverfjall volcano in Iceland establishes a close relationship between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. Serving as a vital stop for hikers, the facility provides necessary services while encouraging visitors to appreciate the natural beauty nearby. The design focuses on creating spaces that promote rest, reflection, and an overall connection to the stunning environment.

Orientation and Layout

The layout consists of blocks positioned to make the most of views and natural light. Large openings on the southwestern side frame the scenery of Lake Mývatn, offering a calming backdrop as visitors move through the building. At the same time, smaller windows face the hiking trail, creating anticipation for the journey ahead. This arrangement of sightlines strengthens the visitor's engagement with the landscape, inviting exploration and enjoyment.

Functional Organization

Inside, the spaces are arranged in a way that promotes movement and accessibility. From the entrance hall, guests can easily access key facilities like private restrooms and an information counter. This organization fosters interaction among visitors and helps facilitate smooth transitions between areas. Each part of the building has a specific purpose, ensuring that the needs of those using the facility are met efficiently.

Materiality and Sustainability

Materials play a significant role in the design, supporting both durability and environmental responsibility. Prefabricated cross-laminated timber elements provide structural support. Rammed earth is used for its thermal properties, contributing to energy efficiency throughout the year. Insulation is provided by PIR insulation within the wall systems. The choice of locally sourced lava stone for the exterior not only connects the building to the geological context but also creates a unified look that mirrors the surroundings.

Experiential Design Elements

The coffee shop features design elements that enhance the overall experience. High windows invite natural light, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors. By elevating this area, expansive views of Hverfjall and Lake Mývatn become available, allowing patrons to fully engage with the landscape while enjoying their time in the space. The combination of light, view, and material selection cultivates an environment conducive to rest and reflection, deepening the connection to nature.
