The Vida Verde project is located in Marbella, Spain, and is focused on sustainable living. Designed as a microhome, it thoughtfully separates areas meant for communal activities from those designated for privacy. The approach emphasizes the need for both functionality and ecological responsibility, creating a space that meets modern lifestyle requirements while respecting the environment.

Architectural Concept

At its core, the project features a vertical concrete wall that captures rainwater, serving both as a structural element and a barrier between public and private spaces. This wall includes a built-in wind turbine and louvre vents, enhancing natural ventilation. These features highlight the project's dedication to sustainability and provide innovative solutions for energy efficiency and air quality.

Materiality

The materials chosen for the construction include standing seam metal, lime plaster, hempcrete, cross-laminated timber, Argenta Ceramica tiles, and concrete with recycled aggregate. Each of these materials adds to the strength and energy efficiency of the home. The selection reflects a commitment to using resources that benefit the environment while ensuring durability over time.

Sustainable Systems

Incorporating renewable energy sources is a key aspect of the design. Solar panels and the wind turbine utilize the natural resources available in Marbella, allowing the home to function off the grid. This focus on self-sufficiency minimizes reliance on traditional energy sources. Additionally, a biogas system processes waste into energy, offering a practical solution for both energy and disposal needs.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the interior spaces is intentional, with private areas, such as the bedroom and bathroom, elevated above communal zones. This separation enhances personal space and creates an inviting atmosphere in the home. A liquid desiccant waterfall, placed in the private area, naturally manages humidity levels, further improving comfort and air quality for occupants.

The use of louvre vents introduces a dynamic quality to the living spaces, capturing light and air while allowing for privacy. This design element enriches the overall experience of the home and reinforces a strong connection with the surrounding environment. The combination of practical features and well-considered design details makes Vida Verde a notable example of modern sustainable living.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
