Raft Foundation with Flexible Shell Enhances Wetland Interaction

Project in-detail

A flexible shell structure supported by a raft foundation creates a dynamic space for interaction with the diverse wildlife of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserves, serving as an educational center for environmental awareness.
5 key facts about this project
01
Flexible shell design adapts to the harsh climate while promoting energy efficiency.
02
Raft foundation enhances stability and minimizes site disruption in sensitive wetland areas.
03
Inspiration from flamingos informs the building’s fluid architectural forms.
04
Multiple vantage points allow for unobstructed views of the wildlife.
05
Accessible design accommodates a wide range of visitors and community activities.

The Vistas @ Al Wathba Wetland Reserves is located in Abu Dhabi, UAE, amidst a rich natural habitat. This building is designed to help visitors engage with the local wildlife and appreciate the unique environment of the wetland. The overall aim is to connect the structure with its surroundings, emphasizing the importance of ecological preservation and awareness through design.

Design Concept

Inspired by shapes found in local wildlife, particularly flamingos, the building features flowing forms that blend with nature. This approach not only creates an attractive visual but also encourages movement throughout the space. Visitors can feel a deeper connection to the surrounding landscape as they move through the structure.

Structural Features

The building takes on a form similar to a desert tent. This design is both practical and efficient. It uses a pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) structure built on a raft for stability. This choice contributes to durability in the region's climate. The flexible shell structure further supports energy efficiency, aligning with the goal of sustainability.

Visitor Experience

The layout provides numerous viewpoints that allow for clear sightlines into the wetlands. This encourages visitors to observe and appreciate the area’s wildlife. The many openings bring natural light into the interior, creating a warm environment where light and shadow play throughout the day. Each space offers a unique perspective of the surroundings.

Functional Spaces

The Vistas serves multiple purposes. It is designed to host educational programs and community events while remaining accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. Each area is adaptable, accommodating various activities and emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment through education.

The flowing lines of the roof create a connection with the sky, enhancing the overall experience of being in nature. These design details invite visitors to explore and reflect on their relationship with the wetland ecosystem.
