The design features five guest homes arranged in a radial pattern within a vineyard setting. Each home is crafted to provide a blend of privacy and communal spaces, encouraging interaction among guests. Inspired by an antique wine press, the orientation of each house allows for views of the vineyard and surrounding hills, making nature an essential part of the experience.

Design Concept

The approach combines forms associated with wine production, drawing reference from wine barrels and traditional Umbrian farm buildings. This connection to local culture enhances the experience for visitors while reflecting the character of the region. The layout promotes community, while each guest home retains its individuality.

Spatial Configuration

The homes are elevated by 0.6 meters, creating a notable approach through stairs and ramps. This elevation allows for a gradual transition from communal areas to private spaces. A central tower and wall mark the complex, signifying its exclusivity. This feature enhances the sense of being part of something special, while providing distinct zones for interaction and solitude.

Sustainability Features

The central tower also plays a functional role, serving as a marker for the retreat while housing solar panels and a wind turbine. This component emphasizes a commitment to sustainability and responsible use of resources. The integration of renewable energy sources reflects current values in tourism and hospitality, considering both visitors and the environment.

Material Selection

Materials selected for the homes include board-formed concrete, metal siding, wood siding, and stone structure. These materials relate to the agricultural processes tied to wine production, reinforcing the overall theme. Each material is chosen not only for aesthetics but also for its durability and practicality in this setting.

Large windows in each guest home invite natural light and views into the interiors, allowing occupants to connect with the tranquil environment outside. This thoughtful design detail enhances the experience, making the homes feel open and welcoming while maintaining a cozy atmosphere.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
