Pumice Structure Embracing Volcanic Landscapes for Visitor Engagement

Project in-detail

Set against the backdrop of Iceland's black lava fields and Hverfjall volcano, the visitor center utilizes pumice and local materials to create an engaging space that fosters reflection and interaction with the natural environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Uses pumice sourced directly from the site for its thermal properties.
02
Incorporates natural water features flowing from the roof to enhance sensory experience.
03
Design reflects the cave systems of Dimmuborgir, blurring inside and outside spaces.
04
Walkways are strategically laid out to encourage thoughtful interaction with the landscape.
05
Monolithic structure maintains visual continuity with the surrounding volcanic terrain.

The Iceland Black Lava Fields Visitor Center is situated in a remarkable landscape featuring a lake, a prominent volcano, and sprawling black lava fields. The building serves as a destination for visitors, providing necessary amenities while also encouraging reflection and appreciation of the stunning natural surroundings. The design focused on creating a strong connection between the architecture and its environment, promoting an immersive experience for all who enter.

Architecture Concept

The concept of the visitor center prioritizes integration with the surrounding landscape. Walkways wind through the area, leading visitors toward the center and inviting moments of pause and contemplation. The design respects the unique characteristics of the site, allowing the building to blend into the landscape rather than dominate it. By considering the geological features of the region, the architecture showcases the beauty of its environment.

Materials

Incorporating local materials is essential to the project. Pumice, a volcanic rock, is combined with silica and lime to create a specific type of stone used in the construction. This material is both lightweight and dense, providing thermal comfort for visitors in the often cool Icelandic climate. Using materials sourced from the environment establishes a direct connection between the visitor center and the volcanic landscape, reinforcing the project’s authenticity.

Design Elements

The visitor center features a monolithic form that creates a strong relationship with both the interior and exterior spaces. Inspired by the natural caves found nearby, the architecture includes layered slabs and openings that transition smoothly from indoor to outdoor environments. This design encourages exploration and helps visitors interact with the surrounding scenery.

Natural light is an important aspect of the visitor experience. Carefully positioned openings frame views of the landscape, allowing daylight to fill the interior. Additionally, water features bring a sense of calm, as it flows gently from the roof and weaves through the space, echoing the natural streams found throughout the region.

As visitors approach the center, they encounter an intricate balance of light and shadow. Thick walls offer protection while providing glimpses of the beautiful Icelandic landscape, making the connection between the built environment and nature clearly apparent.
