Employing programmable voxels and cloud-like structures, the design adapts to user interactions, creating flexible living and workspace environments that resonate with personal memories.
5 key facts about this project
01
Programmable voxels enable dynamic spatial transformation based on user interactions.
02
Cloud-like structures enhance emotional engagement with the environment.
03
Charred wooden shingles provide a unique aesthetic and durability.
04
Cross-laminated timber panels contribute to sustainability and structural integrity.
05
The bent A-frame design fosters a distinctive architectural form while maximizing space usability.

The Voxel architectural design project represents a shift towards a digital-first approach in architectural practice, focusing on the utilization of programmable elements. The design hinges on the concept of voxels—three-dimensional units of space that can be manipulated within the virtual environment, contrasting conventional architectural methods that rely on fixed materials. This project aims to redefine human interaction with architecture through responsive and adaptable spatial experiences.

In this project, the use of voxels allows for the creation of spaces that can transform according to user needs and emotional states. Each voxel can appear or disappear based on interactions, resulting in an architecture that is dynamic rather than static. This philosophy emphasizes personalization, encouraging users to engage with their environments in a meaningful way, particularly by integrating personal memories into the design process.

Unique Features of the Voxel Project

One of the defining characteristics of this project is its emphasis on fluidity and adaptability. Rather than adhering to a fixed architectural plan, the design promotes a platform where spaces can constantly evolve. This approach allows for a more intuitive relationship between users and their environments. The architectural design incorporates spatial transformation diagrams that illustrate how spaces can shift context—turning a living area into a workspace seamlessly, without the constraints of traditional building layouts.

The project also highlights the emotional aspect of architecture by allowing users to modify their surroundings in real-time. Interactive elements can create gathering spaces that encourage social interactions, while workspaces can transform into more calming environments, adapting to varying needs. This adaptability stands in stark contrast to traditional rigid architectural structures, aiming to redefine the definitions of residential and professional spaces.

Exploring Architectural Designs and Ideas

Architectural plans and sections exhibit how the intricate arrangement of voxels enhances both aesthetic and functional qualities. The design emphasizes the interplay between virtual materials and the user's actions, which can shift the spatial organization and overall experience. The idea of using clouds as a metaphor for memory reinforces the connection between users and their spaces, fostering environments that embody personal significance.

This project offers an opportunity to delve deeper into innovative architectural ideas that challenge conventional perceptions of design. By focusing on the utilization of digital technology within architecture, the Voxel project proposes a forward-thinking method for engaging with space. To fully appreciate the implications and functionalities of this design, readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation further for insights into architectural plans, sections, and overall design philosophy.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
