The Iceberg is a greenhouse restaurant located near the Mývatn Nature Bath in Iceland. The design is inspired by Northern European aesthetics and takes on a form that resembles an iceberg, allowing it to blend into the surrounding mountainous landscape. The building consists of two levels that separate public and private spaces, enhancing its functionality while maintaining a strong connection to nature.

Design Concept

The structure's shape reflects the contours of an iceberg, designed to fit harmoniously with its environment. A pitched roof supports the weight of snow, addressing local climate conditions and connecting the building with regional architectural styles. This design approach highlights both the building's purpose and its relationship to the landscape, emphasizing a cohesive visual experience.

Spatial Organization

The lower level features a spacious greenhouse, primarily enclosed by polycarbonate panels. This choice allows ample natural light, crucial for plant growth and creating an inviting atmosphere. The upper level houses the multipurpose hall, kitchen, and dining area. These spaces are designed to offer privacy and comfort, providing a retreat for visitors while still encouraging engagement with the outdoors.

Landscape Integration

The Iceberg integrates well with the site’s natural topography, using a linear layout that connects indoor and outdoor areas. This design facilitates a smooth transition, making the outdoor landscape feel like an extension of the building. Rainwater runoff is effectively managed, allowing for irrigation that supports both the greenhouse and the surrounding environment, showcasing a commitment to sustainability.

Detailing and Impact

The pathway leading to the dining area is long and purposeful, guiding visitors past the greenhouse and creating anticipation along the journey. The multipurpose hall is conveniently positioned at the entrance, making it easily accessible and improving the flow of people through the space.

Large windows throughout the building frame panoramic views of the blue waters of Mývatn and the nearby mountains. This feature not only enhances the dining experience but also reinforces the connection between the interior spaces and the beautiful natural surroundings.
