The Kúra Coffee Shop is located in Hverfjall, Iceland, designed as a community space that connects with its surroundings. The design features two distinct structures that create a feeling of coming together, inspired by the traditional longhouse form. This approach serves both the café’s function and its role as a gathering spot, strengthening the bond between visitors and the striking landscape.

Architectural Form and Layout

The project showcases a simple yet thoughtful configuration where the two structures rotate around a functional corridor. This layout helps visitors flow easily between the café workshop and the exhibition area. The spaces are organized to enhance interactions among users while framing the captivating views of the surrounding landscape. The orientation emphasizes the relationship between the buildings and their environment.

User Experience and Interaction

At the heart of Kúra is the café workshop, which features an open coffee roaster. This design invites patrons to observe and engage with the coffee-making process. It encourages a hands-on experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the craft of brewing coffee. Nearby, the exhibition area offers a sunken lounge designed for comfort and relaxation. Natural light fills this space, linking visitors to the outside and providing a welcoming atmosphere that changes throughout the day.

Sustainability and Materiality

The design reflects a commitment to sustainable practices. A half-pipe steel shell roof covers the coffee workshop, managing water runoff effectively while enhancing the building's profile. The polycarbonate drape roof mimics the shapes found in the local geology, allowing daylight to enter while maintaining a connection to the outdoor setting. Exposed timber rafters add warmth and support the traditional longhouse aesthetic, creating a cozy environment.

Functional Areas and Efficiency

Kúra's layout includes various functional spaces that support effective operations. It features a café entry counter, kitchen, seating areas, storage, bathrooms, an office, and public amenities. Each area is arranged to facilitate movement among patrons, making it easy to navigate. This arrangement enhances the overall visitor experience and encourages engagement in the different spaces.

Kúra Coffee Shop offers a thoughtful response to its surroundings. The design highlights how architecture can foster connections among people while respecting the natural landscape. The use of light and the arrangement of spaces invite interaction and create a welcoming environment for all who visit.
