Polished Concrete Tower Embracing Grjótagjá's Unique Fissures

Project in-detail

A polished concrete tower rises from the fissures of Grjótagjá, creating a relationship between the natural landscape and internal spaces that invite exploration and reflection for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design incorporates a polished concrete exterior that mimics the surrounding rock formations.
02
Strategically placed openings allow natural light to filter through various interior spaces.
03
The structure aligns with geological fissures to create a cohesive relationship with the landscape.
04
Visitor experiences highlight transitions between dark and light spaces for enhanced exploration.
05
Public amenities are integrated thoughtfully to serve practical needs while maintaining aesthetic unity.

The design located in Grjótagjá, Iceland, responds directly to the remarkable geological features of its setting. It provides functional spaces while inviting visitors to explore and connect with the landscape. The concept focuses on the interplay between solid construction and the ephemeral qualities found in the natural environment, allowing people to experience the surroundings in a meaningful way.

Form and Structure

A prominent tower is the central feature, rising from the terrain to create an ascent into the expansive Icelandic landscape. The design reflects the area's topography, guiding visitors as they move upward. The interior spaces offer a variety of atmospheres, with dark areas transitioning to light, creating a flowing experience that highlights the relationship between the building and its environment.

Material Expression

Materials are chosen for their ability to complement the surroundings. The polished exterior helps the structure integrate into the landscape while also standing out against the rugged terrain. However, where the building appears to fracture, coarser textures are revealed. This contrast tells a story about geological changes, linking the architecture to the natural processes occurring beneath the surface.

Spatial Experience

The interiors are designed to foster visitor interaction, addressing practical needs alongside the exploration of space. Facilities like public toilets and an office are carefully incorporated to support the overall experience without disruption. Internal spaces are organized to maintain a connection to the outside world, inviting light to flow through and creating a dynamic atmosphere as visitors progress through the tower.

As people ascend the tower, the layout encourages discovery and reflection. Each level offers new views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the journey. Narrow openings lead to expansive vistas, providing a final, powerful moment of connection with nature. The design invites engagement, ensuring that the experience remains grounded in the landscape while also serving practical needs.
