The Memorial for Witches in Indonesia is a space that honors the victims of past injustices while also encouraging civic dialogue. Located next to the Parliament Building, the memorial serves two main purposes: it is a site of remembrance and an open platform for public expression. The design connects historical events to the ongoing journey of democracy in Indonesia, particularly referencing the significant protests of 1998.

Conceptual Framework

The concept of the memorial is deeply linked to Indonesia’s shift to democracy after years of authoritarian rule. It focuses on commemorating the lives lost during the protests in 1998, especially those of four university students who died fighting for their rights. By placing the memorial in close proximity to the seat of government, the design emphasizes the connection between remembering history and engaging with contemporary political issues. It invites people to reflect on lessons learned and the importance of speaking out.

Interactive Design Elements

Covering roughly 17,000 square meters, the memorial can accommodate over 14,000 visitors at once. This spacious layout allows for various activities, functioning both as an open theater and a public plaza. Notably, the design includes two large screens that showcase differing viewpoints on important social matters. This feature promotes conversation and helps people share ideas. Additionally, a long touchscreen board invites visitors to write their thoughts, which are displayed live on a larger screen facing the Parliament, creating a lively and interactive environment.

Symbolism and Centerpiece

At the center of the memorial is a podium that represents the four students whose lives were cut short during the protests. This central aspect encourages reflection and serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices. Surrounding seating areas are designed to provide good views of the Parliament Building, prompting visitors to consider the relationship between the past and ongoing political discussions. The layout carefully balances space for contemplation and community engagement.

Environmental Integration

Besides serving as a memorial, the design includes gardens and gallery spaces that create a calm setting for visitors. Water features are also present, adding a soothing element and giving relief during gatherings. These design choices foster a sense of peace while encouraging participation, allowing the memorial to support both group expressions and personal moments of reflection.

Overall, the thoughtful arrangement of spaces and features allows the memorial to function as a meaningful tribute to the past, while also engaging the public in active dialogue.
