The Pick n Mix architectural project is an innovative compact dwelling designed to meet the needs of young professionals seeking a flexible living solution. Occupying a total area of 25 square meters, this project emphasizes adaptability and user customization, allowing residents to modify their living environments based on personal lifestyle changes and spatial requirements. The architecture integrates modular components that can be reconfigured, promoting efficient use of limited space while maintaining comfort and functionality.

Unique Modular Design The Pick n Mix project stands out due to its modular architecture. This design approach allows for a variety of spatial configurations, enabling users to select and arrange elements based on specific needs. The integrated spaces include a multifunctional living area that serves as both a relaxation zone and a study, a small terrace promoting outdoor interaction, a cozy bedroom nook, and a combined kitchen and dining area. Each component is crafted to serve multiple purposes, emphasizing the efficient use of square footage typical of compact living designs.

Critical to this unique design is the connectivity of the interior spaces. The layout is not fixed; instead, it utilizes movable partitions and adaptable furniture arrangements to foster an environment that can be tailored to different living scenarios. This flexibility addresses the increasing demand for personalized living solutions in urban settings.

Sustainable Materiality and Off-Grid Functionality The Pick n Mix project incorporates a commitment to sustainability through its choice of materials and off-grid capabilities. Key materials include photovoltaic roof tiles that enable energy independence, Kingspan panels for insulation and structural integrity, and frosted glazing for privacy while allowing natural light to enter. The design integrates practical solutions such as a water filtration unit and an underground septic system, ensuring that waste management and water usage align with ecological best practices.

These sustainable elements not only enhance energy efficiency but also illustrate a significant design principle: that modern living can coexist harmoniously with environmental considerations. This integration of utility and sustainability distinguishes the project within the realm of contemporary architecture, setting a precedent for future residential designs that prioritize ecological mindfulness.

Explore the project presentation for a detailed examination of the architectural plans, sections, and designs that further illustrate the innovative ideas behind the Pick n Mix project. Engaging with these elements will provide deeper insights into how the project uniquely addresses the challenges of compact living in an urban context.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
