Pet-Friendly Spaces Enhanced by Mathematical Organization

Project in-detail

Combining pet-friendly elements with a structured mathematical layout, the design creates an engaging community hub that fosters interaction and accessibility for users.
5 key facts about this project
01
Combines a bent A-frame structure with open communal areas.
02
Incorporates a pet-friendly policy to encourage inclusivity.
03
Utilizes cross-laminated timber panels for structural efficiency.
04
Features charred wooden shingles for enhanced durability and aesthetics.
05
Integrates mathematical design principles to optimize spatial interaction.

The design focuses on creating a community space that encourages interaction and welcomes both people and their pets. Located in an urban setting, it serves multiple functions aimed at fostering connections among users. The overall concept prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that the space meets the diverse needs of the community while promoting a sense of belonging.

Community Engagement

Central to the design is the idea of being "PET FRIENDLY," which highlights the commitment to an inclusive environment. By making space for pets, the design allows families and individuals to come together comfortably. This focus encourages a shared experience that is important in today's society, where community interaction is valued.

Mathematical Integration

The use of mathematical concepts, suggested by "A + 1," enhances the relationship between different elements in the design. This structured approach creates a dynamic space that invites users to explore and engage. The careful arrangement of these elements supports easy navigation, reinforcing the idea that form can serve function.

Atmospheric Composition

The inclusion of communal features like a coffee shop adds to the inviting atmosphere. This area not only attracts users but also serves as a natural gathering point, enhancing lively interactions. Such features contribute to making the space a popular destination, where individuals can connect with one another in an informal setting.

Clear communication is evident throughout the design, with text elements guiding users seamlessly. This focus on clarity helps ensure that all visitors feel welcome and informed. The thoughtful arrangement of spaces and uses creates an environment that promotes comfort and connection for everyone involved.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
