Cavern in the Sky is located in the bustling urban environment of Tokyo. It aims to improve the connection between people and nature in a city that often feels removed from the natural world. Individual pods serve as retreats for personal reflection and relaxation. Inspired by the comforting forms of canyon caves, the design offers a unique space where users can find peace amidst the urban noise.

Design Concept

The concept of the pods is grounded in research from Environmental Psychology, which highlights the stress that urban living can impose. Each pod, measuring 2000mm by 2000mm, is carefully placed on rooftops of tall buildings. This positioning not only provides clear views of the surrounding scenery but also protects the privacy of those using the space. The design encourages individuals to engage in self-reflection, allowing them to experience a sense of calm away from the city's chaos.

Materials and Structure

Cross-laminated timber is a key material used in the construction of the pods. It provides strength while also giving the interior a warm, natural look. This choice supports the overall design intent of creating an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of natural cave formations. The use of this material allows the pods to be easily built and integrated into existing urban settings.

External Envelope and User Experience

A noteworthy feature of the pods is their rotating external envelope. Users can adjust this envelope to control how much of the outside world they want to experience. They can choose to be completely secluded, partially exposed, or fully engaged with their surroundings. This flexibility personalizes the experience, accommodating different comfort levels in a shared urban space.

Indoor Garden Integration

Each pod is surrounded by a mini indoor garden, which enhances the experience of being in a natural setting. Adding greenery not only beautifies the space but also improves air quality, creating a more pleasant atmosphere. The garden provides a sensory experience that contributes to relaxation and meditation, making the pods truly feel connected to nature.

Inside, the pods are designed with minimal light and natural textures. This creates a quiet space, encouraging mindfulness and personal reflection while providing a needed retreat from the fast pace of urban life.
