Set in a volcanic landscape, perforated steel structures create an integrated series of pathways and thermal baths that enhance the experience of the region's natural hot springs while prioritizing user privacy.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design incorporates a central tower that serves as a navigational landmark in a rugged landscape.
02
Two distinct caves provide varied levels of privacy for thermal bath users.
03
A continuous pathway minimizes environmental impact while enhancing user engagement with the terrain.
04
Symmetrical pavilion arrangement fosters visual balance and functional accessibility.
05
Material selection includes perforated steel to blend with the volcanic environment and ensure durability.

The BREAKTOWER project at Grjótagjá, Iceland, is situated in a landscape shaped by the meeting of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This environment features eroded landforms and volcanic activity, which play a significant role in shaping the design concept. The goal is to create a space that allows visitors to experience the local hot springs while being mindful of the ecological sensitivity of the area.

Design Intent
The design reflects an understanding of the unique geological features of the site. A central tower stands tall, located at the highest point on the American plate. This tower serves as a landmark, helping visitors navigate the landscape. Around the tower, two caves are designed to provide different levels of privacy for visitors. This arrangement aims to balance public engagement with private moments, ensuring both areas function effectively and complement each other.

Pathway Integration
A continuous pathway runs through the landscape, guiding visitors from one area to another. The pathway design is intended to reduce erosion, which can occur with heavy foot traffic. As visitors walk along the path, they interact closely with the natural features of the site. This connection creates an engaging experience that deepens the appreciation of the surrounding geological formations.

Symmetrical Composition
A sense of symmetry is evident in the arrangement of the pavilions. This symmetry creates a balanced appearance as visitors approach the fissure. The entrances are designed to align visually, creating an inviting entrance to the complex. Each pavilion serves a specific purpose, one for the caves and the other for thermal bath services. This careful planning contributes to the overall functionality of the site.

Material Considerations
The materials chosen for the structure are suitable for the local environment. Steel beams and aged perforated steel plates are used in the construction, providing strength and durability. These materials blend with the rugged landscape while enhancing the overall design. They are selected not only for their structural qualities but also for how they resonate with the natural setting.

The pathway culminates in a secluded hot spring, providing a moment of quiet and privacy amid the dramatic Icelandic landscape. This thoughtful detail allows visitors to experience a tranquil connection with nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
