The microhome designed for Guangzhou's urban village offers a practical solution to the housing challenges faced by rapidly growing cities in China. Positioned on the roof of a typical building within the urban village, it caters to the needs of a diverse population while efficiently using limited space. The design focuses on sustainability and flexibility, creating a living environment that is responsive to the difficulties posed by urban density.

Design Concept

The microhome features a lightweight structure that maximizes spatial efficiency. Its design revolves around modularity, allowing for future adjustments and expansions. By balancing private and communal areas, the layout encourages social interaction among residents. This thoughtful arrangement considers the dynamics of community life in crowded urban settings.

Materials and Sustainability

Modern materials and sustainable practices are integral to the microhome’s fabric. Solar panels provide the primary energy source, aiding self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on external resources. Insulation enhances energy performance, and an electric water heater, combined with a solar battery, supports the eco-friendly approach. To address water management, systems such as a black water/compost tank and a grey water filter and tank are installed, promoting responsible living practices.

Structural Features

The structure employs a steel framework supported by metal cladding, ensuring durability while keeping the profile light. Perforated screens are used to improve privacy and allow natural light to enter the space, which enhances ventilation. These elements work together to fulfill both functional and aesthetic needs, blending the microhome into the urban context.

Interior Layout and User Experience

Inside, the microhome is designed to support various activities and lifestyles. A specially designed table allows occupants to alternate between sitting and standing. This feature addresses concerns about prolonged sitting, contributing to a healthier living experience. By focusing on usability and comfort, the microhome provides a flexible environment where residents can adapt their space for different tasks throughout the day.

In the microhome, thoughtful details create a space that meets the realities of urban life. Every aspect, from layout to features, has been considered to ensure that the home is practical and inviting for its residents.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
