5 key facts about this project
The Mirage is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi and serves as a visitor center. The aim is to enhance the experience for those observing the diverse ecosystem, especially the flamingo population. Inspired by the concept of a mirage, the design reflects how light changes perception. The building's silhouette alters depending on one's view, encouraging exploration while integrating with its natural surroundings.
Form and Interaction
A balance of firmness and flexibility defines the architectural concept, providing a clear structure that accommodates different visitor needs. Multiple viewing typologies are present, such as elevated periscope-like structures that offer wide vistas, as well as benches for resting. Built-in seating arrangements are designed to encourage social interaction. These elements work together to enrich the visitor experience and promote engagement with the wetland’s unique environment.
Circulation and Experience
Ramps dominate the circulation system, allowing people to move through the structure while fostering connections among visitors. Ascending the ramp leads to shaded colonnades, ideal for watching the flamingos. External walkways also create a focus on the sky, contributing to the overall experience. Stairs provide easy access to higher viewpoints, ensuring that visitors have various options as they explore the space.
Thermal Performance and Sustainability
Thermal performance is a key consideration, addressing Abu Dhabi's climate challenges. The design prioritizes natural ventilation, creating a breathable space while protecting against harsh sunlight. Load-bearing wood beams and truss construction give the building structural strength. Perforated metal screens treated with high-albedo glass-based paint reflect sunlight effectively, helping to control heat gain.
Shading and Climate Control
The south-facing elevation features shading panels that optimize sunlight reflection and manage heat absorption. The heights of these panels enhance their ability to provide shade for the interior spaces. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that visitors remain comfortable while enjoying the wetland. The design intentionally incorporates elements that highlight the beauty of the surroundings while creating a sustainable environment.
The building's design includes a perforated metal screen that plays with light and shadows, making it a visual representation of the wetlands' ever-changing qualities.
