5 key facts about this project
The HVERFJALL Coffee Shop is located at the foot of the Hverfjall volcano in Iceland, acting as a rest point for hikers and a community space. The design is based on a vertical concept, making efficient use of a footprint of 230 square meters. It rises through a series of sequential slabs, each measuring 80 square meters, creating a long and slender structure that stands out in the landscape. The focus of the design is on transparency and natural light, establishing an inviting environment for visitors.
Design and Materials
The coffee shop features a concrete structure that incorporates a fully glazed façade. This façade is wrapped in perforated aluminum panels, which serve multiple functions. The combination enhances the building's appearance while managing light and views. The holes in the aluminum allow for natural light to filter in and create different visual effects throughout the day, adjusting with changing weather conditions.
Interior Layout and Circulation
Inside, the layout encourages interaction among visitors. On the ground floor, a coffee bar and kitchenette create an accessible area for guests. This space can extend outdoors in nice weather, allowing visitors to enjoy the surroundings. A mezzanine level above the coffee bar offers additional seating and restrooms, creating an engaging experience that connects guests to the outside landscape.
Functional Distribution
The design accommodates a variety of functions over seven stories. It includes an observatory, offices, performance spaces, and exhibition areas. The exhibition spaces are flexible; rotating walls enable different displays, allowing regional art and cultural narratives to be showcased. The performance space on the fifth floor is suitable for small concerts, while the offices upstairs provide semi-private spaces for staff without disrupting visitor experiences.
Distinctive Features
A noteworthy aspect of the design is a central storage area on the fourth floor, which supports the overall operation of the coffee shop. This area is designed with structural scaffoldings and wooden slats, making it easy to adjust for future needs. The roof serves as an observatory, offering panoramic views of the Mývatn region. A unique detail is the hot-air balloon launching platform, which provides visitors with an extraordinary perspective of the volcanic landscape, enhancing their experience of the site.
