The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower is located in a distinct ecological area designed to enhance visitor engagement with local wildlife, particularly flamingos. The design promotes interaction with the natural environment while providing educational opportunities. Its circular structure allows people to explore and observe in a way that connects them to the surrounding landscape.

Design Concept

The tower's design features a clear circular form that supports a gradual ascent through three levels. The first level, referred to as Level Zero, functions as an entry point with an information area, seating, and educational panels. This initial space transitions smoothly into the first observation level, which contains additional information points and designated viewing areas for visitors. The upper two levels focus primarily on enhancing the experience of observing wildlife in their natural habitat.

Spatial Organization

Each level of the observation tower is arranged to encourage exploration. The upward spiral design allows visitors to move easily from one space to the next. As the visitor ascends, partitions become lighter, creating a sense of openness while maintaining visual connections between the interior and the outdoors. The telescopes located on the second and third levels provide visitors with tools to interact with the environment and view the flamingos up close.

Materials and Aesthetics

The project uses specific materials that strengthen the relationship with the natural surroundings. The entrance features a curved wall made from perforated adobe, marking a clear but inviting point of entry. Ground pathways are composed of squared blocks of raw earth, allowing visitors to feel a direct connection to the ground beneath them. Additionally, plantings of reeds around the path create a living microzone that enhances the overall experience of the site.

Design Details

Architectural features such as the telescopes reflect traditional design elements akin to wind towers. These structures serve practical functions while also contributing to the overall aesthetic of the building. As visitors ascend, the telescopes become more numerous, encouraging deeper engagement with the surroundings. The design ultimately offers wide-ranging views that connect visitors to the natural environment surrounding the tower, enriching their understanding of this unique habitat.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
