## Architectural Design Report: "Pentagon" Observatory and Gathering Tower

### Overview

Located in Kemeru National Park, the Pentagon observatory and gathering tower is designed to promote visitor engagement with the surrounding natural environment. The structure serves as a primary destination for guests, thoughtfully integrating with the park's varied landscapes. The architectural intent is to enhance user experience through functionality and aesthetics, resulting in spaces that encourage both individual reflection and community gathering.

### Spatial Composition

The observatory's design features a pentagonal geometry that facilitates an array of perspectives within the park's expanse. Five distinct sides converge to create a central core, providing multiple vantage points that optimize views. The entry to the structure is elevated upon a wooden platform, ensuring accessibility while minimizing environmental disruption. A central gathering area is linked by a sculptural staircase, serving as both a visual anchor and a means to navigate between levels. Interior platforms and corridors are meticulously aligned with sightlines toward the landscape, promoting a fluid relationship between built space and nature.

### Material Selection and Sustainability

The architectural framework prominently employs sustainable materials, focusing on functionality and durability. Massive timber forms the primary structure, offering thermal comfort and an environmentally responsible building method. Plywood panels are used for flooring and stairs to ensure lightweight construction, while extensive glass elements maximize natural light in observatory spaces, fostering a seamless visual connection with the outdoors. The building features a sloped green roof that promotes biodiversity by allowing native vegetation to thrive, further enhancing the integration of the structure into its natural setting. Weather-sheltering overhangs contribute to visitor comfort while introducing dynamic light and shadow play within the architecture.

The gathering spaces within the observatory are designed for flexibility, capable of hosting lectures, workshops, or quiet contemplation, thus enriching the user experience and serving as an adaptable space for various activities.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
