The Black Lava Visitor Center is located at an important geographical point in Iceland, responding thoughtfully to the surrounding natural landscape. It serves as a place for visitors to learn about and experience the area's rich stories and culture. The design captures the essence of the Icelandic term "Víðsýni," meaning a wide view and openness to new experiences. This center acts as a calm spot for discovery, positioned between the Black lava fields, Hverfjall volcano, and Mývatn Lake.

Concept and Narrative

At the core of the design is the relationship between the building and its setting. The visitor center is designed to blend with the landscape, allowing it to support an engaging experience centered on local stories and history. It invites people to pause and reflect on the natural beauty around them while honoring the significance of the region's culture.

Form and Shape

The center's shape draws inspiration from the sweeping views it offers, resulting in a structure that connects to the Icelandic terrain. This approach helps the building remain grounded in its environment while offering a minimalist presence. The design captures the qualities of both a pebble and a prism, creating a physical reminder of the natural elements that surround it.

Spatial Experience

Careful planning of the layout promotes a smooth flow between indoor and outdoor areas. This encourages visitors to gather and find moments of quiet reflection. Different spaces have been arranged to provide opportunities for interaction with the landscape, enhancing the understanding of nearby geological features. Pathways guide visitors to important viewpoints, revealing varying perspectives on the striking scenery.

Light plays a significant role in the design, influencing the atmosphere within the building. Sunlight filters through the structure, creating changing patterns throughout the day. The way light interacts with surfaces highlights the connection to the Icelandic landscape, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of their surroundings in a new way.
