The Meditative Baths project offers a unique approach to the relationship between sound and light, focusing on how these elements can enhance meditative practices. Located in a serene environment, two distinct spaces—the Sound bath and the Light bath—work together to provide users with opportunities for reflection and sensory engagement. The design promotes a balance of auditory and visual experiences, guiding individuals into a deeper state of mindfulness.

Sound Bath

The Sound bath features a parabolic form that effectively captures and distributes sound waves. This design choice creates an immersive acoustic experience for users, allowing them to feel the resonance of sound in a focused manner. By isolating external noise, the space becomes a retreat from daily distractions. Users can fully immerse themselves in a curated sound environment, which fosters contemplation and a deeper connection to their surroundings.

Light Bath

In contrast, the Light bath employs a partial ellipse design, creating a space where light can flow in freely. Obscured openings allow natural light to enter, casting interesting patterns across textured walls. This light interaction enhances the visual atmosphere of the space. The design highlights the importance of visual stimulation as users engage with their surroundings, creating a harmonious setting for meditation and reflection.

Structural Considerations

The project incorporates practical structural elements, including gabion foundations and radial structures. These components not only provide stability but also contribute to the unique acoustic properties of both baths. The careful selection of forms and materials ensures that the user experience prioritizes the interactions between sound and light, making the spaces suitable for introspective activities.

Amenities

Complementing the bath spaces are essential amenities, which enhance the overall user experience. The inclusion of a fireplace, washing sink, dry toilet, sleeping mat, built-in counter, and main entrance ensures that the design is functional and comfortable for its users. These features support the meditative experience while also addressing practical needs, allowing individuals to engage fully with the environment.

The thoughtful integration of sound design within the Sound bath and the light-infused quality of the Light bath culminate in a place that encourages introspection and mindfulness. Each element serves to create a welcoming environment that invites users to explore their thoughts and feelings in a tranquil setting.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
