The Drakkar Observation Tower is located in Northern Iceland and integrates with the natural landscape. The structure serves as a resting point for visitors who come to explore the nearby Grjótagjá cave. Inspired by Viking longships, the tower features a shape that stretches upward, reflecting the form and spirit of these historical vessels. The design aims to create an immersive experience for visitors, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding area and its cultural significance.

Architecture Concept

The design focuses on both function and visitor interaction. The tower consists of six levels, providing various spaces for guests to enjoy. Access is provided by an elevator and stairs, making it easy for everyone to navigate. This arrangement creates opportunities for people to engage with one another and share the experience of being in such a unique location.

Material Selection

Reinforced concrete and glass form the primary materials of the tower's construction. Reinforced concrete is used for its strength and durability, ensuring the building can withstand Iceland's harsh weather conditions. The use of glass throughout the design allows for abundant natural light and offers sweeping views of the landscape, making the inside of the tower feel connected to the outside.

Visitor Experience

The base of the tower includes amenities such as an information point, a café, and restroom facilities. These features are designed to enhance comfort for visitors. The entrance area, with its large windows, invites natural light in and extends the visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces. A wooden walkway leads from the tower to the cave, allowing visitors to easily access this natural landmark while preserving the environment.

Sustainability Considerations

Sustainable practices are integrated into the design through systems such as rainwater harvesting and geothermal energy for heating. These features contribute to the building's self-sufficiency and demonstrate a commitment to using resources responsibly while minimizing the ecological footprint on the surrounding area.

At the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy views that stretch across both Europe and North America, offering a rewarding experience that connects them deeply with the diverse landscape they stand in. The design emphasizes a balance between cultural heritage and modern visitor needs, providing a unique site for all who visit.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
