5 key facts about this project
The observation tower at Kemeri National Park in Latvia blends into its natural environment while enhancing the visitor experience. Set in an area known for its marshy plains and diverse wildlife, the tower offers a way for people to connect with nature. Its overall design addresses the importance of accessibility and aims to encourage a deeper appreciation of the park's unique features.
Structure and Accessibility
The project includes improvements to existing footbridges that currently do not support wheelchair access. The new footbridges will measure 180 cm in width, allowing safe passage in both directions. A simple wooden structure supports these walkways, featuring longitudinal beams that make moving across the wetland easy and comfortable. This update aims to facilitate better interactions with the surrounding environment.
Observation Tower Design
The design of the observation tower takes several key needs into account, including cost efficiency and ecological responsibility. A wheelchair-accessible ramp is an essential element of the tower, designed with an 8% slope that also measures 180 cm in width. This allows all visitors to reach a panoramic terrace situated about seven meters above the ground. From this height, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the park's low vegetation and waterways.
Structural Innovation
The observation tower employs four corner towers built using a suspended bridge principle, with metal cables providing additional support for the ramps. This structural approach ensures strength while minimizing interference with the natural landscape. Inside, a curving path surrounds a square courtyard, creating an inviting area for exploration. Visitors can wander and take in the diverse ecological features of the marshlands.
At the top, the panoramic terrace invites visitors to experience nature from a new perspective, providing a quiet space to enjoy the views.
