The Dimmuborgir Visitor Centre is located within the unique geological area of Dimmuborgir, known for its remarkable lava formations. It serves as both a mountain shelter and a viewing point, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the surrounding landscape, including views of the lava fields, Hverfjall Volcano, and Myvatn Lake. The design focuses on circular shapes, helping the structure blend with the land while offering clear paths for navigation through the complex rocky terrain.

Architectural Concept

The design features a central support structure that resembles a parachute, providing both stability and visual interest. This element allows for large open spaces inside without many supporting walls, creating a sense of freedom and connection to the environment. The circular layout of the building gives it a unified look and reinforces the theme of orientation within the intricate landscape of lava rocks.

Visitor Experience

The visitor experience unfolds across three levels, each providing different ways to interact with the environment. The ground floor is designed to create a direct relationship with the landscape, making it easy for visitors to feel part of the natural surroundings. In the basement, a multimedia exhibition area presents the geological history and cultural significance of Dimmuborgir through engaging displays. The layout encourages smooth movement, guiding visitors through the story of this unique place while maintaining views of the landscape.

Sustainability and Functionality

Sustainability is a key focus in the design. The building uses low-pollutant materials to lessen its environmental impact. Energy-efficient solutions, such as a geothermal heating and cooling system that uses energy piles, help reduce energy use. Features like triple-insulated windows and exterior roller blinds improve energy performance and comfort for visitors. The green roof serves both as insulation and a means to manage rainwater, enhancing the connection with the local ecosystem.

Design Details

The roof terrace is an important aspect of the centre, providing a natural space for visitors to enjoy the scenic views. This area is designed to blend in with the surrounding plants, creating a stronger connection with the environment. The terrace not only serves as an observation point but also enhances the overall experience of being in Dimmuborgir, allowing visitors to appreciate the natural beauty from a new perspective.
