5 key facts about this project
01
Owl-inspired form enhances the connection to local culture.
02
Slated tiles provide insulation while reinforcing modern aesthetics.
03
Tilted tinted glass minimizes glare and optimizes natural light.
04
Upper floor designed for expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
05
Lower level promotes social interaction with a welcoming atmosphere.

The SOVA Coffee Shop features a carefully considered design that merges cultural elements with practical use. Located near Hverfjall Volcano in northern Iceland, it serves as a gathering place for community members and visitors alike. Its design is rooted in a single concept: the shape of a coffee cup and the symbolic meaning of an owl. This connection to coffee culture is evident in the building's form and layout.

Architectural Form

The structure is designed to imitate a coffee cup, making it easy to understand its purpose. This visual cue embodies the concept of "Fill," referring to both the physical coffee and the inviting atmosphere. The design is separated into two levels. The lower floor is oriented toward social interaction, while the upper floor offers views of the surrounding landscape, creating a space where visitors can connect with nature as they enjoy their drinks.

Spatial Organization

Inside SOVA, spaces are planned to enhance both togetherness and solitude. The lower level encourages conversation and community, acting as a welcoming area where people can gather. In contrast, the upper level provides an open environment that reduces distractions and opens the experience to the outdoors. Each floor serves a specific purpose but works together to enrich the visitor's experience.

Material Selection

Materials used in SOVA Coffee Shop contribute to its functionality and aesthetic. Slated roof tiles offer insulation for the upper floor. Slated flooring tiles help control the amount of natural light entering the space. Tilted tinted glass reduces glare but still allows light to filter in. Stone tiles add a modern touch, while oak wood flooring introduces warmth. Concrete walls help to limit natural light exposure, ensuring the comfort of patrons. Stone marble accents add to the organic feel within the coffee shop.

Design Details

Every design element in SOVA has a specific intention. Spaces cultivate social interaction as well as private moments of reflection. The strategic alignment of outdoor views from the upper floor lets in light and creates a connection with the landscape. This thoughtful approach ultimately enhances the straightforward yet rich experience of enjoying a cup of coffee.
