Overlapping Metal Screen and Precast Concrete Structure Amidst Wetland Views

Project in-detail

The design incorporates an overlapping metal screen and precast concrete structure, creating interconnected pathways that offer diverse views of the Al Wathba wetland reserve while serving as a public observation space.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design features a horizontal orientation that challenges traditional tower structures.
02
Interconnected viewing platforms enhance the visitor experience throughout the landscape.
03
Precast concrete elements provide both strength and architectural expression.
04
A perforated metal screen integrates environmental shading while maintaining visibility.
05
The structure encourages exploration, offering multiple pathways and perspectives.

The project redefines the concept of a tower by adopting a horizontal form, situated within the Al Wathba wetland reserve. By moving away from traditional verticality, the design allows for a unique integration with the landscape. This approach fosters user interaction and engagement, emphasizing a spatial experience rather than a singular viewpoint typically associated with towers.

Design Concept

At the heart of the design is the idea of transforming the tower into overlapping boardwalk-like elements. These features extend outwards while also rising, creating an inviting structure that connects with the surrounding environment. The layout encourages exploration, as visitors move along winding paths that lead to various viewpoints of the wetlands, offering a sense of journey and discovery.

Structural Composition

The architecture serves as a blend of a tower and a series of connected decks. The relationship between circulation and structure is intertwined, making the space both functional and immersive. Visitors navigate through pathways that twist and turn, allowing for gradual encounters with different angles of the landscape. This dynamic form encourages a more interactive experience, moving visitors beyond the traditional passive observation of towers.

Material Selection

Materials significantly contribute to the structure’s overall integrity and appearance. Precast concrete forms the foundation, ensuring durability and stability. Steel MS rib beams provide support and enable sections to project outward. A prefabricated metal screen creates visual interest and serves as a method for shade and ventilation. The design incorporates prestressed concrete ramps to facilitate movement throughout the space, while anodized MS railings contribute to a modern aesthetic. Engineered wood in the boardwalk areas introduces a warmer aspect, enhancing user comfort and interaction.

Architectural Detail

The relationship between materials and form results in a structure that respects and complements the environment. Attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the layout of pathways to the choice of textures on the façade. Each element contributes to a richness in experience, inviting visitors to engage with the landscape in thoughtful ways. The design encourages exploration, offering spaces for reflection and observation, while also framing the beauty of the Al Wathba wetland reserve.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
