The Great Kemeri Bog Visitor Center is located in the unique ecological area of the Great Kemeri Bogs in Latvia. It acts as a center for education and exploration, designed for visitors to learn about and engage with the special plants and animals that thrive in this environment. The design concept balances an uncomplicated exterior with an intricate interior, reflecting the surrounding natural landscape.

Exterior Form

The visitor center features a simple shed-like structure that is raised slightly above the ground. This elevation improves visibility in the forest and creates an inviting entry point. The open corners of the building allow visitors to feel connected with nature even before entering. The design encourages a smooth transition from the outside world into the interior space.

Interior Experience

Inside, visitors find a bog-like form that dominates the space. This organic shape invites exploration and interaction, creating a rich experience for those who enter. The deep niches between the exterior and interior serve as display areas for educational materials, providing insights into the diverse ecology of the bogs. Visitors can learn about the area's unique characteristics in a setting that feels integrated with nature.

Connection to Nature

The center includes an open-air landscape that showcases various native plant species, linking the building with the surrounding environment. This landscape promotes hands-on learning and discovery, allowing visitors to observe and appreciate the local ecosystem. The design emphasizes the importance of understanding and preserving such natural environments.

Campground Integration

Adjacent to the visitor center is a campground that reflects the organic shapes of the bog. This design choice creates a connection between human activity and nature, allowing people to enjoy various outdoor experiences. The campsites provide practical areas for visitors while supporting the educational goal of immersing them in the ecology of the region.

The raised facade offers an unobstructed view of the entrance, giving a clear indication of the unique interior form waiting to be explored. Visitors are drawn into a space that highlights the importance of the Great Kemeri Bogs while enhancing their understanding of this distinct ecosystem.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
