The Inner Island is a meditation cabin complex designed for the Earth Energy Sanctuary, located in a quiet forest area that can only be reached on foot. The design focuses on blending the built environment with the natural landscape. It takes into account both safety and the idea of openness. The complex consists of three separate cabins, each one crafted to support different types of meditation. This thoughtful arrangement encourages personal reflection and a deeper connection with nature.

Cabin Configurations

The first cabin is known as the Forest Floor Layer and rests at the lowest point of the complex. It is completely closed off from the outside world, providing a private retreat for individual meditation. Users can focus on their inner thoughts, free from distractions. This design creates an atmosphere conducive to self-reflection.

The second cabin, called the Understory Layer, is intended for group meditation and activities led by a guide. Located centrally among the cabins, it is designed with open spaces and plenty of natural light. This openness promotes interaction among users and encourages shared experiences. The environment supports collaboration and group reflections, allowing participants to engage more deeply with one another.

The third cabin, positioned at the highest point, is referred to as the Emergent Layer. This structure is designed for meditation that connects users with the surrounding landscape. Its open gates invite nature inside, enhancing users' awareness. The elevated position provides sweeping views of the forest, integrating natural beauty into the meditation experience.

Materiality and Integration

The cabins are constructed using Oregon wood, a material that highlights the project's connection to New Zealand. This choice reflects an emphasis on sustainability while anchoring the cabins in their natural setting. Additionally, the design incorporates elements of the forest, allowing trees and plants to grow through and around the structures. This creates a rich experience for users as they interact with both the architecture and their surroundings.

The Inner Island demonstrates a careful consideration of how spaces for meditation can harmonize with nature. Each cabin invites users to engage not only with their own thoughts but also with the world around them. This thoughtful design reflects a commitment to mindfulness and well-being, enhancing the overall experience of being in such a tranquil environment.
