The Quinta do Monte d'Oiro Wine Tasting Space is located in the Alenquer region of Portugal, a place with a rich heritage in wine production. The goal is to enhance the experience of wine tasting while fostering a connection to the natural surroundings. The design emphasizes blending with the environment, reflecting aspects of traditional winemaking in its form and function. This creates a unique place for visitors to enjoy wine in a setting that celebrates the land’s offerings.

Design Concept
The wine tasting space features a semi-underground structure that resembles a barrel room. This layout is practical for maintaining the necessary conditions for wine storage, such as constant temperature and humidity. It is designed to accommodate a variety of gatherings, whether for small groups or larger events. The focus is on making the space inviting and functional, catering to different visitor needs throughout the year.

Integration with Landscape
Large "Panorama Glass Windows" are a central feature of the design. These windows provide clear views of the vineyards outside, allowing ample natural light to illuminate the interior. This setup invites visitors to appreciate the beautiful landscape while enjoying their wine. The connection to the terroir enhances the tasting experience, making it more immersive and meaningful.

Functional Features
Five ventilation tunnels lead to rooftop tables, which serve both practical and aesthetic purposes. These tables, each adorned with stained glass that represents the five main wines made at Quinta do Monte d'Oiro, create outdoor areas for guests. This design element reinforces the relationship between the space and the wine, allowing visitors to engage with the offerings in a contextual environment.

Materiality
The structure incorporates oak log walls that improve sound insulation. This choice reduces outside noise from nearby activities, creating a quieter atmosphere for visitors. The oak also references the traditional methods of winemaking, adding to the overall experience. Alongside this, stone masonry and white plaster walls unify the design with the surrounding buildings within the Quinta do Monte d'Oiro complex, providing a consistent visual language.

The result is an inviting environment that encourages exploration and appreciation of the wine. The thoughtful design fosters interaction with the land, blending the elements of nature, light, and space to create a setting that reflects the spirit of the vineyard.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
