The Enmeshed Horizons is located in Pavilosta, a coastal city known for its rich landscape. The design focuses on blending the built environment with natural features, creating spaces that encourage community connection while also allowing for personal retreat. The project draws inspiration from the surrounding geography, inviting users to engage with the landscape in meaningful ways.

Design Concept

The core idea of the project centers on Pavilosta’s existing farming fields, which serve as metaphors for the Baltic Sea and the local landscape. The Seascape Pond symbolizes the sea, while the Landscape Field reflects the earth. This relationship between architecture and nature forms a cohesive understanding of the site, enhancing the experience of those who inhabit it.

Circulation Strategy

A network of trails connects various parts of the site, reflecting Pavilosta's own hiking paths and allowing for easy movement. This layout respects the existing terrain, ensuring that access is both efficient and minimal disruptive. By raising the single and double huts, the design keeps pedestrian circulation smooth while preserving the natural condition of the landscape.

Gradient of Solitude

The siting of the huts is deliberate, creating zones of solitude relative to the administrative building. The four-poet hut is positioned nearest to encourage social interaction, while the two-poet and one-poet huts are set further away to fulfill different needs for privacy. This arrangement allows individuals to find their preferred balance between engagement and retreat.

Structural Elements

The design follows a modular approach, which enhances accessibility and comfort within the huts. The single-bed hut has a 6m by 6m footprint, while the double-bed hut is slightly larger for extra occupants. The four-bed hut extends down to meet the ground, facilitating entry for all users. This elevation strategy reduces site disruption and reflects a commitment to sustainability.

The use of OSB panels, lumber framing, insulation, and weather-sealed facades highlights a focus on durability and energy efficiency. These choices ensure that the structures can withstand the coastal climate while maintaining their connection to the landscape. The overall design fosters interaction between people and their environment, creating a balanced living experience.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
