The Monte D'Oiro Wine Hotel is an architectural project situated in a lush vineyard landscape, designed to provide guests with a rich sensory experience that emphasizes the connection between the built environment and nature. This project serves multiple functions, including accommodation, recreation, and event hosting, all while promoting the region's wine tourism. The design seeks to create a harmonious dialogue between the structure and its surroundings, emphasizing sustainability and local culture.

The hotel’s layout is organized into distinct zones that include the accommodation area, recreational spaces with dining facilities, and a conference center. This organization enhances the flow of movement throughout the property, allowing guests to navigate seamlessly between different areas. The building's architectural composition incorporates a modern idiom while simultaneously respecting traditional Portuguese design elements, creating a sense of place that is both contemporary and rooted in local context.

The architectural design employs a range of materials to create a visually interesting and functional environment. Reinforced concrete forms the primary structural framework of the hotel, providing robustness and stability. Stone cladding adds a rustic element, integrating the building with its natural surroundings. Brick cladding and plaster are employed to enhance textural variety, while metal perforated panels serve functional purposes by offering sun protection and capturing airflow. Interior spaces utilize wood to introduce warmth and create inviting atmospheres.

Unique design approaches define the Monte D'Oiro Wine Hotel and set it apart from other projects. The integration of extensive glazed openings and covered terraces invites natural light and offers unobstructed views of the surrounding vineyards. This emphasis on transparency blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging guests to engage with the landscape. Additionally, the incorporation of green walls and roofs reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability, supporting biodiversity while enhancing the aesthetic appeal.

The design of the hotel also prioritizes guest comfort through climate-responsive elements, including outdoor spaces that provide shade and shelter. The thoughtful arrangement of pathways and pedestrian-bridged connections encourages exploration of the site, fostering interaction among guests and the landscape.

The Monte D'Oiro Wine Hotel harmoniously combines a range of architectural ideas, creating a space that respects its context while providing functionality and beauty. The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
