Natural Stone and Wood Retreat Embracing Sacred Geometry for Wellness

Project in-detail

Inspired by sacred geometry, a series of Zomes built with natural stone and wood harmonizes with the landscape to create adaptable healing spaces focused on wellness and community engagement.
5 key facts about this project
01
Zomes utilize a double spiral geometric design to enhance mindfulness.
02
The project emphasizes community interaction through a central fire pit area.
03
Natural stone and wood materials are sourced locally to reflect the landscape.
04
Rooftop photovoltaic solar panels provide sustainable energy for the structures.
05
A water harvesting system supports efficient irrigation throughout the site.

The Zomes project, titled "VALE DE MOSES - Zomes: A Journey Within," is located in the Serra de Estrela mountains of Portugal. It aims to encourage wellness and a connection to nature with a series of adaptable healing spaces. The design draws on sacred geometry and seeks to resonate with the complex patterns found in both nature and human consciousness. In this way, the Zomes invite visitors to engage deeply with their surroundings and themselves.

Conceptual Framework

The concept behind the Zomes explores sacred geometry, featuring diamond shapes arranged in a double spiral. This geometric design enhances the visual appeal while also promoting introspection and creativity. By using these shapes, the Zomes aim to awaken visitors' inner selves, offering experiences that resonate at a personal level.

Spatial Organization

The layout begins with an arbor entryway that guides visitors to a communal seating area around a fire pit. This arrangement encourages social interaction and strengthens the sense of community. Meandering pathways lead guests through the landscape, allowing them to enjoy the natural surroundings and the calming sounds of a nearby waterway. Overall, these elements work together to create a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere.

Sustainability Considerations

Sustainability plays an important role in the design of the Zomes. The buildings use a natural material palette that includes local stone and wood, which helps to connect the structures to their environment. Rooftop photovoltaic solar panels filter natural light and provide energy, while a water harvesting system offers cistern storage for irrigation. The Zomes are positioned to ensure good air circulation, which enhances comfort for the occupants.

Distinctive Features

The emphasis on unity with nature is a key aspect of the Zomes. Each structure serves as a retreat and encourages reflection on the relationship between people and the earth. The careful use of light and open spaces creates an atmosphere where guests can connect with the surroundings. This design promotes an environment for exploration and self-discovery, allowing visitors to engage with both the landscape and their inner thoughts.
