Natural Slate and CLT Integration Elevates Community Space Amidst Volcanic Landscapes

Project in-detail

Set against a dramatic landscape of a lava field, the integration of natural slate and CLT creates a community hub that offers diverse recreational and educational experiences for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
Natural slate exterior harmonizes with the surrounding volcanic landscape.
02
Cross-laminated timber provides structural efficiency and sustainability.
03
Integrated media tablets enhance visitor interaction and information access.
04
Design includes dedicated zones for recreation and quiet contemplation.
05
A viewpoint offers expansive views of the adjacent lava field.

The architectural design blends a range of recreational, educational, and communal spaces into a cohesive entity, all situated in a landscape highlighted by a lava field. The design concept focuses on providing flexibility in usage, allowing visitors to flow naturally between different activities. By creating an environment that promotes engagement, the design aims to cater to a wide variety of user experiences.

Building Program

The layout features a collection of elements like a sunk lounge zone, trampoline, terrace, parking facilities, camping area, children's playground, farmyard, drop-off point, and a competition site. Each of these areas has been arranged with care to invite exploration and participation, ensuring that the facility effectively meets the diverse needs of its visitors and encourages community interaction.

Visitor Experience

An essential aspect of the design is informed by visitor feedback, which revealed that many people spend over an hour within the center. This insight led to the integration of various information stands and media tablets throughout the space, making resources readily available to users. Such features ensure that visitors not only have access to information but also feel actively engaged during their time at the facility.

Zoning Strategy

The zoning strategy provides clarity by organizing the building into distinct functional areas. Specific spaces for recreation, education, and quiet contemplation have been established to allow for easy navigation throughout the complex. Key zones include an exhibition/chill zone, a cinema/lecture room, and a cafeteria, designed to encourage both social engagement and moments of solitude.

Material Considerations

Materials play a significant role in both the practical aspects and the visual appeal of the design. The project incorporates natural slate tiles, expanded polystyrene insulation, concrete slabs, CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) studs, and brushed concrete walls. These choices not only promote durability and efficiency but also support sustainable practices. Features such as energy recovery ventilation systems and geothermal heat pumps further demonstrate a commitment to reducing environmental impact.

The architecture interacts thoughtfully with the surrounding landscape, particularly through a viewpoint that offers a stunning view of the volcanic terrain. This design aspect invites visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the site, enhancing their overall experience in the space.
