Koru is an architectural endeavor inspired by the Maori concept of "loop," which symbolizes renewal through the new shoots of the silver fern. Located within Earth Energies Sanctuary, the design brings together natural landscapes and built spaces in a way that promotes meditation and self-reflection. It features interconnected areas that create a pathway for visitors, serving as a functional setting for both personal and communal activities.

Site Features

At the entrance, a rainwater reservoir and fountain capture attention, positioned at the lowest point of the landscape. This water feature serves a practical purpose as an irrigation source, while also enhancing the visual appeal of the site. The inclusion of a wildflower field encourages local biodiversity, and designated areas for yoga and meditation invite calmness and contemplation.

Architectural Layout

The layout incorporates covered walkways and pergola structures, providing varying levels of shelter and openness. Visitors experience a journey that transitions from expansive spaces to more intimate areas. This arrangement supports moments of quiet reflection alongside opportunities for social interaction, encouraging a connection between people and nature.

Material Selection

The building utilizes a mass wall system made of concrete masonry blocks, finished with a stucco rainscreen on the outside for strength and insulation. Inside, walls are covered with plaster to maintain a cohesive visual style throughout. The roof is constructed with a zinc finish over lightweight concrete, which serves to enhance energy efficiency. Polished concrete flooring is also used, providing a durable and practical surface that fits well within the overall design.

Koru fosters a strong relationship with the surrounding environment. Native plants populate the wildflower field, promoting ecological balance and offering seasonal changes for visitors to enjoy.
