The Yoga House in Amieira Village, Portugal, serves as a space for yoga and meditation against a backdrop of rich natural surroundings. By incorporating a modern interpretation of traditional monastic architecture, the design creates a peaceful environment for users to engage in practices that enhance their well-being. The building reflects the concept of 'Yoga-Vihāra,' highlighting a harmony between people and the landscape.

Conceptual Framework

The design is grounded in principles from Buddhism and Hinduism, emphasizing the path to personal and spiritual growth. This path is represented by the access points to the building, illustrating the effort one must undertake to achieve mindfulness. The thoughtful use of light and shadow within the spaces deepens the experience, inviting users to reflect on their journey through time and the cycles of life.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the arrangement of spaces promotes self-exploration and personal development rather than structured teaching. Different areas cater to various activities, balancing collective and individual practices. This organization makes for engaging experiences while connecting essential elements of the natural world: earth, water, fire, air, and space.

Materiality and Environment

The choice of materials, mainly wood and stone, enhances the building's connection to nature. These elements contribute to a calming atmosphere that supports the yoga experience. Large windows allow light to fill the interiors, creating a serene ambiance and fostering a connection with the outdoor environment.

Sustainability and Landscape

The project’s alignment with the landscape reflects a commitment to environmental care. It includes water management strategies like rainwater harvesting and systems for treating grey and black water. This design ensures that the building can operate independently while honoring the local ecosystem. The landscaped area features diverse planting approaches, including buffer zones and areas left untouched, which encourage local biodiversity and are easy to maintain.

Views from the expansive windows frame the surrounding landscape, strengthening the relationship between the indoor space and nature. This connection plays an important role in promoting reflection and serenity within the Yoga House.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
