“The Chamber of Memories” is located in Riga and serves as a place for reflection and remembrance. It is designed to fit harmoniously within its natural surroundings. The project combines vertical and horizontal elements that evoke a sense of both simplicity and intricate design. The columbarium niches are brought together into a single cohesive structure, creating a connection between nature and the built environment.

Conceptual Framework

Inspiration for the design comes from nature, specifically the analogy of mycelium. This analogy demonstrates how different elements can connect, much like the way mycelium binds various parts of an ecosystem. The spatial arrangement features chambers that encourage quiet moments of contemplation. These intimate spaces invite visitors to engage in personal reflection against the backdrop of the columbarium.

Materiality

Concrete forms the structural basis of the project, while a layer of sea gravel wraps around it. This material choice reflects the local landscape of Riga’s coastline. Such materials help create a stable structure while also offering a tactile relationship with the surrounding environment. The thoughtful selection of materials promotes a smooth transition from the natural meadow to the organized, yet inviting, interior.

Lighting and Interaction

Carefully integrated lighting complements the design, enhancing comfort and visibility. It is placed discreetly in the edges of benches and slabs to create a warm atmosphere. Visitors can also express their connections with the space by placing candles and small stones on the columbarium's surface. These small gestures cultivate a sense of personal involvement and deepen the memorial experience.

The design subtly rises from the landscape, allowing for a gentle flow between the user and the space. Each chamber draws visitors in, encouraging them to reflect and connect in a meaningful way within the peaceful surroundings.
