REST ROOM is a meditation space designed to improve mental wellness among workers in Tokyo's busy corporate environment. Located in corporate plazas such as Marunouchi, Meguro, Shinagawa, and Shibuya, it serves as an important refuge for individuals facing the daily pressures of their jobs. The overall design aims to blend functionality with an artistic touch, encouraging a healthy balance between work and relaxation in the urban landscape.

Material and Aesthetic Considerations

Metallic screens on the exterior feature vibrant mushroom patterns created by artist Yayoi Kusama. These screens not only add visual interest but also signal the purpose of REST ROOM to passersby. The contrast between the lively exterior and calm interior is a key point of the design, creating an inviting space that fosters both art and rest.

Interior Experience and Comfort

Inside, REST ROOM focuses on comfort through sculptural surfaces that accommodate various resting positions. Spaces for sitting, lying, and leaning are thoughtfully arranged, inviting users to interact and unwind. The transition from the active plaza to the tranquil interior is deliberate, ensuring that visitors feel a significant change in atmosphere, which promotes relaxation.

Sustainability and Functionality

Sustainably grown mushrooms form an integral part of the design, highlighting the project's environmentally friendly approach. Mycelium is used not only for its ecological benefits but also for its ability to absorb sound, enhancing the comfort within the space. This focus on sustainability reflects a growing awareness within architecture about the relationship between buildings and their environments.

Illumination and Atmosphere

At night, LED lights enhance the sculptural elements, creating a warm and welcoming environment. This careful lighting design contributes to a sense of safety and calm, making it an appealing place for people to pause and recharge. The attention to atmospheric detail helps make the space a true haven in the midst of the city’s fast pace.
