Alleinkabine, or "Alone Cabin," explores the cultural elements of Berlin, especially its connection to techno music and the historical significance of the Berlin Wall. The design serves as a space that emphasizes personal experience in a shared setting, creating a meditative area for those who enjoy music. The concept contrasts the oppressive nature of the Wall with a vibrant, colorful interior that invites visitors to engage and explore.

Conceptual Framework

The design centers on the themes of solitude and community, capturing the essence of Berlin's techno culture. A series of modular blocks create a flexible environment, allowing for various interactions. This adaptability reflects the improvisational characteristics of electronic music. As visitors move through the space, they experience how the rhythm of techno music influences the architectural layout, offering a structured yet dynamic setting.

Musical Integration

A key aspect of Alleinkabine involves the "4 To The Floor" rhythm, which is fundamental to Berlin techno. The design draws inspiration from tracks by well-known DJs such as Ellen Allien, Paul Kalkbrenner, Marcel Dettmann, and Ben Klock, each contributing to one of the walls in the booth. Musical notations from their works shape the spatial arrangement, illustrating a direct connection between sound and structure. This approach allows visitors to engage with the music in a physical space, enhancing the overall experience.

Material Considerations

Materials used in Alleinkabine significantly contribute to the project's goals. Black valcromat and milled white high-density foam are chosen for their lightweight and recyclable properties. These materials not only support sustainability but also enhance sound quality within the booth. The thoughtful selection reflects an intention to create an environment that resonates with the auditory experience of techno music, reinforcing the bond between space and sound.

The interior features undulating surfaces that visually engage visitors, created by the rhythmic designs influenced by musical notations. This contrast with the more solid exterior enhances the immersive quality of the experience. Visitors can find themselves drawn into the atmosphere, while the structured form of Alleinkabine remains an anchor in their exploration.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
