With movable solar panels that track sunlight and a thatched roof for thermal efficiency, the design serves as a sustainable residence for foresters in cold forest regions.
5 key facts about this project
01
Movable solar panels adjust to sunlight for optimal energy capture.
02
The thatched roof enhances thermal insulation and blends with the environment.
03
Rainwater collection system addresses water scarcity in remote locations.
04
The lookout feature allows occupants to monitor wildlife and surroundings.
05
Wall system integrates ply larch cladding for improved moisture control.

The Forest Guardian project serves as a thoughtful response to the specific needs of cold forest areas, providing a functional residence for foresters. Located in a natural setting, it merges the requirements of living and working in nature with the deep connection to the environment. The design concept centers on the idea of the hut as a protector, guiding inhabitants while drawing inspiration from natural forms.

Architecture Concept

The design takes cues from the structure and protective qualities of pine cones. This biomimetic approach is evident in the inclusion of solar panels that can move to track the sun. This feature aids in maximizing energy production. Additionally, the project incorporates a rainwater collection system, which offers a practical solution to water availability in remote areas.

Functional Layout

The arrangement of spaces is both practical and comfortable. It includes a living room, kitchen, observatory, working area, bedroom, and bathroom. Each area is positioned to serve its purpose effectively, ensuring ease of movement and use. The lookout feature is particularly noteworthy, allowing residents to observe the forest, a crucial aspect due to the potential presence of wildlife.

Environmental Considerations

Responding to the cold climate is essential. The design focuses on retaining heat in a setting where temperatures can drop significantly. By minimizing external contact, the structure reduces energy consumption and enhances thermal performance. Natural ventilation systems support air circulation, maintaining a pleasant indoor environment regardless of the season.

Materials and Sustainability

Material choices play an important role in the project’s overall effectiveness. The walls consist of ply larch cladding and wood fiber board, providing insulation and moisture control. A thatch roof adds both aesthetic value and thermal benefits. Additionally, triple-glazed windows are used to limit heat loss while maximizing natural light, contributing to a brighter living space.

Forest Guardian stands as a carefully designed structure that integrates well with its environment. Features such as adaptive solar technology and a rainwater collection system demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. The design emphasizes resilience while remaining connected to its geographical context.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
