5 key facts about this project
The Myvatan Viewing Center is located in the picturesque area of Myvatan and serves multiple functions, including offices, a café, and exhibition spaces. The design aims to create a strong connection between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. Community engagement and interaction are key themes throughout various parts of the center.
Architectural Concept
At the heart of the design is a large viewing platform that offers wide views of the landscape. This feature encourages visitors to engage with their surroundings and promotes exploration. The overall layout allows for a smooth flow between different spaces, making it easy for users to move through the center while enjoying a variety of experiences.
Interior Spatial Organization
The entrance foyer acts as a welcoming reception area and integrates office spaces in the background. Near this area is the café seating, which provides a place for informal interactions among visitors. This arrangement emphasizes the importance of accessibility and fosters a sense of community, inviting people to connect with each other.
Materiality and Sustainability
Material choice reflects a commitment to sustainability. The façade consists of locally sourced black volcanic stone, giving the building a strong character while enhancing energy efficiency. Thermally efficient glazing is used to allow natural light to enter the interior spaces and to help conserve energy. The concrete superstructure features sustainable practices, including the use of fly ash, reinforcing the center’s environmental goals.
Design Features
A notable element is the Thermal Trombe system in the viewing platform, which captures solar energy effectively. This feature helps to reduce heating costs and boosts the sustainability of the design. The roof includes a moss garden, adding a natural aspect that also regulates the indoor climate. This blend of nature and architecture underlines the center’s role in fostering a harmonious relationship between people and the landscape.
