Designed to educate visitors about local biodiversity and ecological conservation.

The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center is situated within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in the United Arab Emirates. Designed to engage visitors with the area's unique biodiversity, the center functions as both an entry point and a hub for exploration. The design emphasizes a strong connection to the surrounding environment, prioritizing a visitor experience that is respectful of the natural landscape.

Access and Flow

Upon entry, guests are welcomed by a dense area of native vegetation. This initial experience draws visitors into the local environment, encouraging them to explore further. The journey continues through interconnected pathways. tunnels of wild reeds give way to green perforated metal mesh, guiding visitors organically toward the main reception area. This layout reflects the natural contours of the landscape, enhancing the overall experience.

Interior Spaces

Inside the building, various spaces serve educational purposes, including an interpretation gallery and a multipurpose hall. These areas are designed to foster interaction and engagement, offering large openings that frame views of the surrounding wetlands. This design choice connects visitors to the rich biodiversity outside, helping them better understand the local ecosystem.

Sustainable Strategies

The design includes several passive cooling methods to improve environmental performance. A waterbody beneath the building acts as both a reflective element and a cooling pond, contributing to thermal comfort throughout the interior. A moss ceiling also enhances insulation while improving acoustic conditions, creating a conducive atmosphere for learning.

Ecosystem Integration

The project utilizes the Miyawaki method for ecosystem restoration, which promotes rapid growth of dense, layered native vegetation. This method enhances the microclimate and provides habitat for local wildlife. The materials chosen for the construction include concrete for flooring, moss for the ceiling, and perforated metal sheets that envelop the structure, reinforcing the design while ensuring compatibility with the surroundings.

The design encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the ecological richness of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. Through thoughtful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, it offers a meaningful experience that highlights the importance of nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
