Explores the philosophical concept of diastasis through its form.

The project "Diastasis" is located in the Svalbard Archipelago, an area known for both its natural beauty and environmental importance. The design is based on the concept of existing between two conditions, derived from the Greek word διάστασις. Its primary purpose is to serve as a space for contemplation, promoting interaction between visitors and their surroundings. The overall design explores themes of knowledge, exploration, and the human connection to the unknown.

Monolithic Structure

The centerpiece of the design is a large monolith that rises prominently, connecting the earth with the sky. This structure serves as a symbol of stability while representing the movement from the known world to the unknown. It stands as a significant element within the landscape, encouraging those who see it to engage with its presence. The monolith acts as both an anchor and a metaphor for humanity’s ongoing quest for understanding.

Human Engagement

Atop the monolith is a human figure, reaching out to greet visitors as they approach. This detail adds a human scale to the composition, highlighting the importance of interaction and connection. The figure serves as a visual reference, prompting observers to think about their own experiences and journeys. By including this aspect, the design underscores the relationship between architecture and human exploration.

Geographical Context

Setting the project in Svalbard is relevant due to its association with The Arc, the global seed vault. This location reinforces themes of preservation and continuity woven into the design. The architecture engages with the surrounding natural landscape, emphasizing a dialogue between humanity and the environment. The site strengthens the notion that the unknown is not just empty space but a rich area for exploration and discovery.

Architectural Language

While specific materials are not mentioned in the description, the project emphasizes architecture as a means of communication. This idea highlights the intention to create connections and convey deeper meanings through form. The design serves as a narrative framework, inviting people to engage with its shape and context. This suggests that the visual and physical aspects of the project should align with its philosophical foundations and invite personal interpretation.

The design culminates in the harmony between the structure and its environment. The monolith stands firm, representing humanity’s persistent search for knowledge. Its solid form reflects the timeless endeavor to understand what lies beyond the known, encouraging visitors to consider their place in the vastness of the world.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
