The setting at Quinta Do Monte D'Oiro is defined by its expansive vineyards, which are vital to the region's cultural and agricultural identity. The design focuses on creating a connection between the surrounding landscape and the winery. Visitors are guided through a narrative that begins in the vines and leads to the wine production area, allowing them to engage with the entire process of winemaking.

Connection to Landscape

The project highlights the importance of the natural environment by establishing a direct pathway from the vineyards to the winery. A staircase weaves through the landscape, allowing visitors to experience each stage of the wine production firsthand. This design choice not only emphasizes the agricultural context but also fosters a greater appreciation for the local terroir and its significance in winemaking.

Integration of Elements

The existing hill's contours are transformed into a gentle slope that accommodates the new wine tasting room. This careful positioning provides striking views of the vineyards while ensuring that the visual flow of the landscape is maintained from other nearby buildings. This integration illustrates the design's goal of blending architecture with the natural surroundings, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Environmental Considerations

Natural ventilation is a key aspect of the design, contributing to user comfort. The design incorporates a slope at the rear of the tasting room, allowing for cross-ventilation that keeps the interior pleasantly cool. Large, glazed sliding windows serve to connect indoor and outdoor spaces. When these windows are opened, they create a direct link to the landscape, reinforcing a sense of openness.

Materiality

Monolithic concrete supports the cantilevered roof of the tasting room, framing essential areas such as the entrance, restroom, and main tasting space. Irregular cut stone is used for the pavement, which helps ground the design in its natural context and strengthens the connection to the surrounding landscape. The thoughtful use of materials aligns with the intention of creating a space that resonates with its environment.

A defining feature is the cantilevered roof, which not only provides shelter but also visually connects the interior with the vineyard landscape beyond. The roof's form accentuates the views, inviting visitors to engage with their surroundings while enjoying the wine tasting experience.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
