The design of the booth presents an exploration of temporary architecture that focuses on sustainability and user engagement. Set within the urban context of Berlin, the booth acts as a multifunctional space that revitalizes the cultural environment tied to the local techno scene. Its overall concept takes inspiration from the shape of an egg container, which symbolizes hope and renewal, influencing both the aesthetics and purpose of the structure.

Design Concept

The booth features an octagonal plan that draws from the traditional egg container shape, allowing for effective use of space. This geometry enables various configurations, with larger sides creating openings for interaction. Such flexibility is important, especially as it aligns the booth with different user needs within changing urban dynamics.

Material Selection

Recycled paper molded into pulp serves as the primary material for constructing the booth. This choice not only supports environmental goals but also offers sufficient strength for the structure. The layered nature of the molded pulp forms both the walls and roof, eliminating the need for extra support structures while simplifying assembly and transport.

Weather Adaptability

To protect against adverse weather conditions, the booth includes a bioplastic raincoat that shields it from rain, ensuring it remains usable and comfortable. In addition, stabilization options using reused bottles or water-filled canisters highlight a practical approach to securing the structure while promoting resourcefulness in the use of materials.

User Interaction

The booth encourages active participation from users by inviting them to bring their own electronic devices, like smartphones and speakers. This integration enriches the experience, as applications can synchronize sound and light effects within the space. The result is an environment that fosters a sense of community and interaction, aligning with the booth's purpose in urban settings.

By focusing on thoughtful design and sustainable material choices, the booth stands as a functional addition to Berlin's landscape. Its unique shape, based on the egg container, offers a fresh perspective in a city known for its cultural vibrancy.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
