The Coffee Case project is a mobile coffee service unit designed for urban areas that see a lot of foot traffic. It serves the needs of people who want quick and quality beverage options while on the move. Operating effectively in locations such as train stations, airports, and exhibition halls, the design focuses on practical features that make it easy to use for both customers and operators.

Functionality and Convenience

This unit is equipped with essential tools for preparing a range of coffee drinks, including espresso and cappuccino. It also offers refreshments like ice cream and cold beverages. The design responds to the fast-paced lifestyle of city dwellers, making it easy to grab a quality drink on the way to work or while exploring. With its self-propelling mechanism, the Coffee Case can be easily moved to different locations when needed.

Ease of Setup

Setting up the Coffee Case is designed to be quick and straightforward. When it arrives at its location, operators can unfold the unit and secure it in just a few minutes. Fixing the wheels, erecting the floor and roof—these steps are simple and efficient, which is important in busy spots. Once set up, the unit is ready to start serving customers without delay.

Materiality and Aesthetic

The materials used in the Coffee Case enhance both its durability and its visual appeal. The exterior features corrugated aluminium sheets, which create a lightweight and robust structure ideal for a mobile service unit. Inside, birch plywood boards add warmth to the design and help maintain its strength. This careful choice of materials not only supports the functional aspects of the unit but also helps it blend into urban environments.

Operational Design Elements

The layout of the Coffee Case is planned to make service smooth and efficient. Key areas for preparation and serving are arranged to support quick interactions between staff and customers. This organization is vital for maintaining quality service, even during busy times. The overall design also includes large glass doors and windows, which offer a view into the unit. This feature invites passersby to engage with the offerings, showcasing the variety available while keeping the look cohesive and inviting.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
