Earth Glimmer is situated in Hverfjall, a volcanic crater in northern Iceland. It offers broad views of Lake Mývatn and the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields. Designed as an observation platform, it enhances visitors' experiences by allowing them to connect with the striking natural environment. The design focuses on themes such as humility and a sense of spiritual connection, blending with the landscape rather than competing with it.

HUMBLENESS

The design features a cuboid shape that aligns with the surrounding terrain. This choice intentionally minimizes the structure's prominence, allowing it to stay in harmony with the volcanic landscape. By keeping a low profile, the design ensures that attention remains on the breathtaking scenery of Iceland, providing a space for quiet reflection rather than distraction.

SACREDNESS

A notable aspect of the design is the inserted cross-like volume, which acts as a subtle spiritual element. This feature encourages visitors to think about the relationship between the material world and deeper meanings. By incorporating this piece, the architecture fosters moments of contemplation and provides an opportunity for people to connect more fully with the experience of being in nature.

MIRRORED TRANSPARENCY

The structure uses glass as its primary material, creating a visual effect similar to ice. This approach allows light to play across the surface, providing both transparency and reflection. Different types of glass are used purposefully in various parts of the facade. This design choice not only adds to the building's aesthetic quality but also supports its durability in the challenging environment.

FUNCTIONAL CONFIGURATION

Functionality is a key consideration in the layout. The lookout tower resides within a designated area, providing an unobstructed 360-degree view of the dramatic landscape. Each detail of the design works together to enhance the overall experience. Visitors can move through the space and feel the connection to the surrounding views, making it an integral part of their visit.

Large glass walls frame the landscape outside, allowing the natural world to enter while still providing a sense of shelter and comfort. The architecture encourages users to engage with the beauty of the environment while feeling protected within the space.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
