Mirrored Reflections in Natural Rock: A Gateway to Iceland's Underground Kingdom

Project in-detail

With a ring of mirrors reflecting Iceland’s stunning natural phenomenon and a central tower that invites introspection, the design provides an immersive space that deepens the visitor's connection to the historic Grjótagjá caves.
5 key facts about this project
01
A ring of mirrors captures and reflects the northern lights, enhancing the visual experience of the site.
02
The central tower serves as a focal point for exploration, guiding visitors through the space.
03
Polished stainless steel facades create dynamic interactions with the changing landscape.
04
Natural rock is incorporated to mimic the local environment and support native plant growth.
05
The design utilizes geothermal heating principles for energy efficiency in a cold climate.

The project is located in the unique landscape of Iceland, where it merges architecture with the natural world. Designed as a journey of perception, it guides visitors through a portal into an underground kingdom. The overall concept emphasizes the connection between built environments and their geological contexts, creating a dialogue that reflects the surrounding nature.

Reflective Engagement

A ring of mirrors forms a key feature of the design. These mirrors capture and reflect the colors of the sky and the landscape, including the northern lights. This reflective element enhances the visitor experience, encouraging active engagement with the surroundings. As the natural light changes throughout the day, so too does the perception of the space, allowing architecture and nature to interact in an ongoing narrative.

Central Exploration

At the center of the design is a tower that serves as a focal point. This structure encourages visitors to explore their relationship with the Grjótagjá caves. The tower, along with the surrounding ring, allows for easy movement between the interior and the exterior. This connection with the landscape makes the experience of visiting feel more cohesive and integrated.

Material Considerations

Materials play an important role in the design. Polished stainless steel facades reflect the landscape, creating a visual connection with the environment. Concrete is used for its strength and energy-saving qualities, ensuring comfortable indoor spaces. Natural rock is also incorporated, which provides protection from the elements and supports the growth of local plants, further connecting the structure to its surroundings.

Bioclimatic Design Features

The design includes elements aimed at improving energy efficiency and comfort. The excavated site protects visitors from harsh weather while maintaining warmth through natural thermal properties. Skylights are positioned to let in light and reduce the need for artificial illumination. A geothermal heat exchange system takes advantage of stable underground temperatures to enhance comfort inside the building.

As visitors move through the space, the interplay of light and reflection creates an inviting atmosphere. The colors of the landscape and sky seem to come alive within the interior, deepening the sense of connection to the natural world.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
