Mirrored Reflections and Natural Materials Create a Connection to Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

The use of reflective surfaces in combination with natural materials establishes a visual connection to the Icelandic landscape while providing private accommodations for guests seeking tranquility.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reflective surfaces create a mirage effect that obscures the building's form.
02
The layout prioritizes privacy while maximizing views of the surrounding landscape.
03
Natural materials link the guest house to its Icelandic heritage and environment.
04
Unique design allows for communal spaces and private areas in harmony.
05
The building integrates traditional turf house elements with modern aesthetics.

The Dögun Guest House is located in the striking Icelandic landscape, designed to serve as a place for travelers seeking comfort and connection to nature. The overall design merges elements of traditional turf houses with a modern framework. This thoughtful integration allows the guest house to feel like a natural part of its environment.

Concept and Integration

The design concept centers on blending historical Icelandic architectural features with a contemporary approach. By anchoring the building in the landscape, it resonates with the surrounding topography. The use of mirrors creates a unique effect that softens the building's lines, making it visually disappear into its setting. This technique not only emphasizes the landscape but also invites those inside to appreciate the changing views outside.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout is designed to ensure privacy for guests while still offering views of the beautiful Icelandic scenery. Each guest room is arranged to allow for personal retreats yet encourages social interaction in shared spaces. This design creates a balance that enhances the overall experience of staying at the guest house. Guests have the option to engage with others or enjoy moments of solitude amidst the landscape.

Materiality and Sustainability

Natural materials play a crucial role in the design. They connect the guest house to its surroundings and reinforce a commitment to sustainability. The choice of these materials reflects the characteristics of traditional Icelandic architecture while ensuring the building is durable and in harmony with its environment. This focus on using local resources supports the idea that the guest house belongs to this place.

Architectural Details

Unique features, such as the reflective surfaces and varied floor plans, enhance the sense of calm within the guest house. These design aspects encourage guests to experience the relationship between their indoor environment and the outdoor setting. Such details enrich their stay, fostering a deeper connection to the natural beauty of Iceland. The Dögun Guest House stands as a thoughtful retreat, inviting visitors to explore its tranquil spaces while appreciating the landscape around it.
