INTO THE MIRAGE is located in Iceland, where its design engages with the striking landscape and geological features of the region. The project includes a visitor center and a spiral tower, creating an environment that connects people to the area’s rich geological history. The overall design concept represents a metaphorical cloud of steam, allowing visitors to explore their surroundings while contemplating the natural processes occurring beneath the Earth.

Architectural Concept

The guiding idea centers on the relationship between human experience and the natural phenomena found in the area, particularly the two continental plates that divide this unique landscape. The design aims to dissolve conventional boundaries and invite visitors to explore the site more actively. This approach encourages a deeper understanding of the geologic significance that defines the location.

Mirrored Facades

A key feature of the design is the use of mirrored facades. These reflective surfaces alter the continuity of the continental ridge, creating a visual effect that makes the structure stand out in the environment. The mirrored elements help to engage the interest of those passing by, reflecting the surrounding landscape and encouraging a closer look at the architecture itself.

Spiral Ramp

Inside the structure, a spiraling ramp guides visitors through a gradual journey. This feature focuses on creating an immersive experience, where the usual distinctions between space are lessened. Light filters through varying shapes of layered fabric mesh, contributing to the atmosphere within. The interaction between light and space creates a mood that ties the interior to the vastness outside, enhancing the sense of being part of the landscape.

Culminating Viewpoint

At the top of the ramp, there is an important viewpoint where visitors can look down at the geological separation caused by the diverging plates. This moment serves as both an educational point and a space for reflection on the natural forces that have shaped the land over time. The arrangement of the structure highlights this viewpoint, allowing visitors to appreciate the unique connection between the built environment and the natural world surrounding it.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
